Open Studio

It’s been 3 years since we established our studio in Hamilton House in Bristol - nestled in Stokes Croft between two bits of much-publicised street art: a Banksy and Cosmo Sarson’s breakdancing Jesus mural - and we’ve never looked back! As part of Hamilton House’ Open Day we are inviting you to come along to experience our work where it was created.

14th of June 2014, 12 - 6pm, Hamilton House, BS1 3QY, Bristol

And this is what we’ll have set up in our 2 studios:

The Hunter

The Hunter is an intricate paper diorama that comes to life through projected animations, music and sound effects. When the intricately cut paper model illuminates, tiny shadow figures seem to appear behind the diorama in order to depict a silent fable about the cruelty of human conduct and the ability to repent our actions. The Hunter is a gallery installation that tells a 15 min narrative on a loop for a maximum of 10 people at a time.

Sprite Symphony

Commissioned by and developed for the Royal Shakespeare Company and later adapted for the Enchanted Parks, Sprite Symphony is a magical installation using projections and sound to create a beautiful yet dark display of fairies that have been trapped in jam jars and are trying to escape their glass cages. The fairies knock and tap on their jars and thereby create a polyphonic musical composition. The sprites were exhibited in a Victorian display cabinet in the RSC theatre foyer in Stratford upon Avon throughout winter 2013, they also featured in the windows of the park keeper‘s shed at the Enchanted Parks in December 2013.

Psycho - Homage to Hitchcock

Psycho features a scene lifted straight from the iconic movie, and re-created using paper and light. The vignette retells the pivotal moment in ‘Psycho’ when the female character is stabbed to death by an unknown assailant in the shower. But in the McGuire’s version, the violent murder is witnessed by the audience through the shadows in the windows of the house where the crime takes place. This adaptation to paper and light became a Vimeo staff pick in 2012.

The Haunted Dress

Commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Haunted Dress is an installation using theatre couture, projections and sound to tell the gruesome story of a beautiful but savage fairy queen who seduced a man into madness. The immersive installation consists of a wedding dress on a mannequin which is brought to life through video projections and a narrative soundtrack.

Jam Jar Fairy

Originally commissioned and developed for theRoyal Shakespeare Company as an installation in which 8 fairies create a polyphonic composition by knocking on the glass, Jam Jar Fairies have been developed into stand alone video sculptures. Each jar features a holographic projection of a hovering fairy sprinkling fairy dust by knocking on the glass‘ wall.

Sets from The Paper Architect

The Paper Architect is a theatre piece combining paper-craft, animation, projection and performance. It tells the story of an elderly model-maker who uses his paper creations as vessels for his imagination.
★★★★ “It’s a show with a gossamer touch that leaves you shivering.” Metro
★★★★ “What follows makes the jaw drop and the head whirl…” The Times

New Work in Progress

We’ll be working on our Hitchcock Trilogy, a variation on 3 iconic Hitchcock films sets made from paper and animated through light and video mapping. The series will feature 3 intricate paper models inspired by Rear Window and The Birds, and our award winning animated paper installation Psycho - Homage to Hitchcock. The paper models will lure its audience to take a voyeuristic look into Hitchcock’s iconic world of anticipation and terror.

Saatchi and Colossal!
